The Southern Co-operative’s aspiration for Freshwater was to deliver a store with significantly increased floor space and car parking to adequately serve the needs of Freshwater and the wider West Wight area, reducing both outflow of expenditure and unnecessary travel. The store’s focus is on fresh and local products from Island producers.
The site layout with clearly defined boundaries and spaces makes for a pleasant and enhanced amenity for the benefit of the local residents of the Freshwater area. The eco-store design incorporates features including energy efficient building fabric, permeable paving, responsibly sourced building materials, energy efficient plant and lighting, water saving appliances and pollenating native planting throughout the site. All of the electricity supplied to the store is from renewable sources.
PWA worked closely with the client’s estates and retail operations team, the main contractor and fit-out contractor, to ensure that the scheme was successfully delivered throughout all of the design and construction phases. The £2.5M traditionally procured project was opened to shoppers in September 2015.
