Piper Whitlock worked with Kimberley Developments Plc and Waitrose store planners to design a scheme in the heart of the South Downs National Park on a tight urban site in the Centre of Midhurst.
The urban design response was key to the success of the proposals, with the built form complementary to the urban fabric of the surrounding block which the site backs onto. The scale and massing of the proposals was carefully controlled to respond to the surrounding context and site constraints, with materials specifically selected from local sources.
While initially the design and use met opposition from design officers, PWA successfully argued that the building sited in this location was not widely visible to impact on the National Park. Upon a full review of the proposals by the South Downs National Park Design Panel comprising of distinguished national and local architects, the design approach was endorsed and the scheme went on to receive overwhelming support at public consultation.
Sadly the project was not developed.
